Sorry. Still get the following error after upgrading radlib:

/usr/bin/ld: can't locate file for: -lcrt0.o
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [wviewd] Error 1

Sorry, but not upgrading radlib was a big problem...

Now you have another MacOSX "opportunity" - a quick google search on that error message brings up a whole slew of links for applications other than wview (such as MySQL) which have had that problem on Mac. Maybe you can find a solution...

radlib may be the problem. I tried installing on a "clean" system with the same result/error.

No, Mac OSX is the problem. How does installing on a clean system prove anything other than Mac OSX is goofy right out of the box?

Again, do the google search. It isn't a radlib problem, it is a static linking problem on Mac OSX when using libtool, which is new for radlib, but not for many other libraries/applications. The Mac OSX problems aren't new either...

Did you look at: http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-273.html?

Does that look like a radlib problem to you? Geez!

No, what I was referring to was that you said "not upgrading radlib first" created the problem. But it appears that the radlib upgrade applied before or after the attempted install of wview-1.8.3 creates the same problem.

So, radlib is/was working fine with MacOS X 10.4.3 and wview 1.8.2, but the attempted update has disabled the installation of wview. As a non-programmer and neophyte command language hobbyist, I can't discern what or where the problem is (even after reading the link provided).

But, for your information, from this point forward wview is no longer compatible with Mac OS X.

What I said was that not upgrading radlib to 2.5.0 was a big problem - there can be more than one problem.

Do you see 200 lines of errors now? No you don't because you have now upgraded radlib as the release notes indicate.

Do you have an additional problem which is related to Mac OSX and the static linking of libraries using libtool? Yes you do.

Did radlib just convert to libtool for C++ shared library compatibility? Yes it did.

Does it build on FreeBSD, the genesis of Darwin? Yes it does.

Are there ample documented examples of this problem on the web for Mac OSX which have nothing to do with radlib or wview? Yes there are.

Are there always trade-offs in life? Yes there are. Mine is to move forward with radlib for other purposes besides pleasing 5 Mac OSX users who use it for wview and will not do the legwork to figure out how to get static linking with libtool-generated libraries to work on their OS. Yours is to use Mac OSX and loose having a consistent unix platform but rather some goofy hybrid.

I want this to work for you Mac guys, but I don't have time every time radlib/wview exhales a little bit differently figuring out how goofy MacOSX is going to react to it. I build and test them on linux and FreeBSD. And if Apple didn't have to muck so much with FreeBSD to call it Darwin, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I will try to look at it sometime in the future, but if you want it soon, do the research. There are two ways to look at Mac OSX: as a sexier Windows or as another unix variant. radlib, wview and I see it as a unix variant. Meaning if you are going to use them, you must be willing to learn how your system works and how to tune it/diagnose it. Not a windows type who thinks there are mice running on wheels inside. I'm not saying that is you, but I do suggest you not resist digging into Darwin and unix.

just to pipe up.. as an experience MacOS X user there shouldn't be any problem getting radlib happy with MacOS X and the library linker. I don't have time to get into looking now, but in the future I'll try to lend a hand. In the meantime I would say don't lose heart, MacOS X isn't that quirky when it comes to compiling/building UNIX stuff... the quirks that it does have are, usually, very well known by now and *someone* out there has fix them.

You find the answer on google, if I don't find it first.

Maybe I found a way around it for you...

Download http://www.wviewweather.com/wview-1.8.4p1.tar.gz
and give it a try.

Of course it still requires radlib 2.5.0.

OK, I may have found something on this...

Let's try a different images.c tonight to see how it goes:

Access http://www.wviewweather.com/images.c

From your browser choose "Save Page As" and save it as images.c somewhere you can find it easily

Then copy it to your wview-1.8.4p1/htmlgenerator directory over the existing file

Then from the wview-1.8.4p1 directory:
sudo /sbin/SystemStarter stop "wview"
sudo make clean
sudo make install
sudo /sbin/SystemStarter start "wview"

Try to get that up and going before midnight so we can see how it goes tonight.

Nevermind that, just download http://www.wviewweather.com/wview-1.8.4p2.tar.gz and give that a try.

The image file swap did the trick last night, but I've update to wview-1.8.4p2 this morning nonetheless.

BTW, I like the fact that the wview "counter" (i.e. number of days, hours, etc.) does not reset with every computer restart. Is that by design?

Thanks,
Paul
