Now that I've been running Wview for about a month and its working well, I was thinking of setting up the database support. Not being familiar with these two products, is one "better" than the other in terms of beginner learning/usability ? Does wview initially populate the database with existing archive(s) is does it start from scratch once its activated ?

It starts from scratch... that wouldn't be a bad enhancement though to plug in all of the flat file records... post it on the WishList forum and maybe one day...

PostGreSQL vs. MySQL - it is a religious thing IMHO. I like MySQL, but that is because I have been using it longer. Both are well supported and very active in development, although I think there are a few more utilities to access MySQL databases, but I could be wrong. PostGreSQL seems a bit more friendly to the software developer in terms of the client API. Do not use the 5.X series MySQL, they have stolen some of the radlib namespace and things won't build. The 4.X series for MySQL is used by Sourceforge, etc. and it is actively supported. PostgreSQL up to and including the 8.X series has been tested with radlib/wview.

Have fun but keep disk space in mind.
