I am running Fedora Core 4. When Fedora starts wview shows red and does not start the daemons. I can manually start wviewd and htmlgend and everything seems to work no prob. I have re-read and reinstalled the package several times with the same results. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve
P.S. I sure am happy to see Linux support for the Vantage PRO

Have you placed the wview start script in the right location? Did you define the appropriate soft link for your run level? Can you run wview using the wview start script from the command line as root? If all of the above are true, it should start at boot.
Let me know these specifics.

One other thing: if you specified a non-default PREFIX to the configure scripts for radlib and wview as something other than /usr/local, then the paths in the wview start script will need to be changed to match your PREFIX.
Do a "whereis" on wviewd, htmlgend, wvalarmd, etc. - that will tell what path they are installed on and what the wview start script should match.
Let us know...

Looking at your weather site, it looks like you haven't run wviewconfig properly or completely. Your elevation is showing to be -300 ft, your stationCity and StationState don't look right - maybe you hacked the html template for your page title (not necessary), but the header line at the top of the browser does not show the proper city/state substitutions taking place.
You have some type of problem with spacing in your template file for your weather home page (index.htx) - the other templates appear to be fine. Maybe the editor you used for changing the template did something with spaces. I would start over with a fresh copy of the index.htx file - you may not need to change it at all other than the radar image/link and forecast button.
It is also not preferred or necessary to use all caps for your station city and state.
You will also need to upgrade to 1.7.4 when you can.

I have edited the template to change the weather radar link at the bottom. Looking at other pages I think that there is a spacing problem between my longitude and elevation. most other sites using the same template seem to have a dash where mine is missing a space and looks like a minus 300 as a result. I will check all the other suggestions and install 1.7.4. I will not be able to try for a few days.
Thanks for all your help!

Mark,
I have installed 1.7.5 and carefully gone through the configuration with the same results. Here is the results of the whereis command:
[root@linuxbox steve]# whereis wviewd
wviewd: /usr/local/bin/wviewd
[root@linuxbox steve]# whereis htmlgend
htmlgend: /usr/local/bin/htmlgend
[root@linuxbox steve]#
I am going to do some other checking but if there is any info I can provide that might help let me know.
Thanks,
Steve

Is the wview start script in /etc/rc.d/init.d?
Is it executable (chmod +x wview)?
What runlevel are you booting into (3 or 5)? 3 if no X windows, 5 if you boot into X windows...
Is there the appropriate soft link in /etc/rc5.d (or rc3.d)? It should be created with the command:
Code: | ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/wview /etc/rc5.d/S91wview | (or rc3.d)
Please answer these questions and post your wview start script and the output of: ls -al /etc/rc5.d (or rc3.d)...

BTW, there are more than just the wviewd and htmlgend daemons which potentially get started, according to your configuration (done with the wviewconfig script). |

Also, I asked before if you could run the wview start script from the command line as root:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wview start
What is the output of that? What do you see in /var/log/messages?
Post this as well...

OK,
I am booting into runlevel 5
I have recopied the script, done the chmod command
and recreated the soft link. one note, the command you posted is different than the one in the user manual. the difference being S91wview vs. S98wview in the user manual. I am not sure if this matters.
Sorry but I am somewhat a newbie at linux commands.
When I run /etc/rc.d/init.d/wview start it just returns me to the command line and there are no messages in the /var/log/messages here is the output:

No problem...
You are running the wview script as root?
As root:
Post the output of "env"...
Post the output of "whereis bash"...
You should see "Starting wview daemons..." even if the script fails when you execute it.
It is beginning to sound like you didn't install bash, but you would have to try very hard to do that during install.
Also, post your /etc/syslog.conf file contents...

Hey, just had a thought -
Comment out the line in the wview start script
Code: | test -x $WUNDER_BIN || exit 8 |
by making it:
Code: | #test -x $WUNDER_BIN || exit 8 |
You are not building for Weather Underground I bet... |

Comment out the line I indicated in the above post - I bet a dollar that is it...
I am going to fix the wview start scripts in the 1.7.6 distro now - the wvwunderd daemon is the first (and only) daemon which is conditionally built by the configure script, thus it very possibly may not be there and the start script should continue anyway...
Everything else looks fine. |

I just released version 1.7.7 which fixes the start script bug when Weather Underground support is not included during configuration. This should fix your problems, sorry to run you through all of the background info, but hopefully it will be beneficial for someone else in the future.
